She came from Greece, she had a thirst for knowledge. She studied sculpture at Saint Martin’s College, that’s where I caught her eye. She told me that her dad was loaded. I said “In that case I’ll have a rum and coca-cola”. She said “fine”, and in thirty seconds time she said,

“I want to live like common people. I want to do whatever common people do. I want to sleep with common people. I want to sleep with common people like you”

Well what else could I do? I said, “I’ll see what I can do”.

I took her to a supermarket. I don’t know why but I had to start it somewhere, so it started there.

I said “Pretend you’ve got no money”. But she just laughed and said “oh you’re so funny”. I said “yeah? Well I can’t see anyone else smiling in here”.

“Are you sure you want to live like common people? You want to see whatever common people see? You want to sleep with common people? You want to sleep with common people, like me?”

But she didn’t understand. She just smiled and held my hand.

Rent a flat above a shop, cut your hair and get a job, smoke some fags and play some pool. Pretend you never went to school.

But still you’ll never get it right. Cos when youre laid in bed at night watching roaches climb the wall, if you call your dad he could stop it all.

You’ll never live like common people, youll never do what common people do. You’ll never fail like common people. Youll never watch your life slide out of view.

And dance, and drink, and screw, because there’s nothing else to do.

Sing along with the common people, sing along and it might just get you through. Laugh along with the common people, laugh along even though, they’re laughing at you and the stupid things that you do.

Because you think that poor is cool.

Like a dog lying in a corner, they will bite you and never warn you. Look out. They’ll tear your insides out cos everybody hates a tourist. Especially one who thinks it’s all such a laugh and the chip stains’ grease will come out in the bath.

You will never understand how it feels to live your life with no meaning or control.

And with nowhere left to go.

You are amazed that they exist. And they burn so bright whilst you can only wonder why.

I have been singing this to myself for weeks so thought I’d share.

This post is just some links and quotes on the subject of chavs. Chavs are only one part of the British underclass but this is a place to start, to begin to understand how much the underclass here are hated.

ive been taking an unofficial break from reading blogs and writing to knit and play computer games instead. i do need to write about this though. i appreciate this particular post may not make much sense but i dont really care, because ive been holding it in for a long time and i could be silent forever but it is doing me in, so better to make a cryptic post and make a start than just implode in anger and bitterness and frustration.

ive been feeling very alienated and silenced because of something that happened here in the UK, not to me personally, but to someone i identify with in many ways and that I care about, even though I never have and never will meet her. i dont give a shit about celebrity stuff in general, its just that when i first saw this person, i immediately felt fond of her and i saw parts of her in me and me in her, even though in many other ways we are not alike and have little in common. so, recently, she has been publicly lied about and torn down and so many fucked up things have been said about her, and it has made me feel so depressed. as much as we are not similar, the point is, in the ways that count, we are, and many of the things said to and about her i have had said to and about me, and they werent true or fair and they were all based on our (lack of) class.

noone is even trying to hide that in this case, ive seen it said so many times that she lacks class, like HELLO?! thats how she is and has been oppressed, through her lack of class, but people are using it to attack her and to laugh at her, her oppression is a fucking joke right, so my oppression is a fucking joke too. of course she deserves to be hung (not the worst thing ive seen written either) because she LACKS CLASS. she doesnt deserve to be famous because she LACKS CLASS. she is nasty chav scum because she LACKS CLASS. how can everyone be so blind as to what is happening here?

what i am feeling most from this thing with this woman is that noone cares about class, not really. most people are oblivious or downright ignorant of it. people say that she lacks class, using that against her, whilst knowing that she comes from this really underprivileged background. and some people argue that she should be ‘understood’ because she lacks class. FUCK THAT! she does not need fucking reeducating, she doesnt need to learn class or get class like even those sympathetic people suggest. i dont want her to get class. i dont want to get class. i want all of you to fucking give up your fucking class.

this has left me feeling so alienated politically. even the working class ’spokespeople’ have been very loudly condemning this person as not being one of them - well of course she isnt. she is the same as me, from that class that noone wants to acknowledge - the drug addicts, the homeless, the prostitutes, the kids in care, the unemployed, the disabled, the single mums, the people who are classified as ‘morbidly obese’ and in need of hospitalisation or reeducation or whatever the fuck the tabloids are calling for this week. imprisonment probably. or in the case of children, being taken away from their parents and put into the care system.

we dont get to be ‘working class’ because the working class are split between defining themselves as the Worthy Working Class and the Aspiring Middle Class and we aren’t good enough for either. what everyone agrees on, these better than us working class people and the better than us middle class people, is that we arent like them and everything we are is disgusting, the way we look, the way we dress, the way we talk, think, eat, speak, everything. yet somehow they call us the bigots. and they get away with it because we arent allowed to talk for ourselves or defend ourselves and when we do the way we express ourselves is ‘wrong’ and ‘disgraceful’ and ‘ill mannered’ and ‘lacking in class’ and so everything we say can be ignored or laughed at or lied about or twisted or *gasped* at in *middle class shock*, and they own all the media anyway and can paint it anyway they want.

this may be my last ever blog because just by identifying with or speaking up for this woman (even without naming her, at this point anyway, but im sure its obvious at least to those in the UK who im talking about) i will be defined as the nasty scum bully bigot, not allowed to even defend myself, because i dont have the right to speak because of my lack of class, and anyway why dont i just fuck off back to the hole i crawled out from and get a proper education and learn to speak proper english, right? i feel like i cant say anything and yet i have so much to say. im too scared to say it. and to some people they’ll just think why am i making such a big deal out of it because its just dumb celebrity stuff. but its not. its my life. and its her life. its what we’re worth and what we’ve gone through and its about who is allowed to speak.

so some people are allowed to be bigoted nasty fucks because they do it in Proper English. its okay to tell someone theyre from the gutter if you do it with class. but we’re not allowed to defend ourselves because we dont have the right manners. so it’s about class. and class is about division and oppression and supremacy and privilege and violence. and you cant take someone who lacks class and say that their lack of class is a form of bigotry to those who have it. but thats what people are doing, in the name of progressive politics no less.

either this rant has got that out or ill be back with quotes and more rantings on this subject. or not. who can say. but im pissed off and ive been fuming about this for near on two months now. i cant see this one going away.
